Meaning & History
This name is used as 筆 (hitsu, fude) meaning "handwriting, (painting/writing) brush," originally made up of 文 (fumi) meaning "writing(s)" and 手 (te) meaning "hand." The phrase had undergone sound shifts, first from 'fumite' to 'funde' and then from that to what is now 'fude.'Fude was uncommon in the Edo period (1603-1868) and in the Meiji period (1868-1912) before becoming very uncommon in the Taishō period (1912-1926).
