Scripts 风后(Chinese, Japanese Kanji)
Meaning & History
From the characters 风 (fēng, meaning “wind”) and 后 (hòu, meaning “after”). Fenghou was the prime minister during the reign of the Yellow Emperor (Xuanyuan). According to legend, the Yellow Emperor had a dream in which wind (fēng) swept a landscape clean of dirt and rubble. He surmised that the wind signified a person capable of giving commandments, and since the Chinese character for “dirt”, 垢 / gòu, would become 后 / hòu after the radical meaning “earth” (土) is removed, he should seek out a man named Fenghou. After being recruited, Fenghou proved to be an adept administrator and calendar-keeper. He later became the inventor of the south-pointing chariot, i.e. the compass.
