Actually Ernest is derived from Ernst, it is the English version of Ernst which is German and means serious.
The first Ernst that comes to my mind is Ernst Röhm, a member of the Nazi party, which is hardly an honourable namesake. Putting aside all negative associations, the name itself looks unfinished, which is why I prefer Ernest.
