Personally, in this day and time, I don't find it a good idea to name a child something/anything with the meaning of "foreign" or "foreigner". The word has a very negative association by now.

Erlendr as a word is not used anymore in Scandinavia, it's an extinct old Norse word. In Sweden it's called utlänsk, which translates roughly to "outside land". In Norwegian and Danish it's called fremmed, which is something like "strange". So this name has no negative connotations or associations to "foreign". And why promote hostility against foreigners? As a Swede, I can tell you that this name is not associated with foreigners since it's old Norse and Erlandsson is a quite common surname. It's just a bit dated, but would assume that it's going to have a swing of popularity since old Norse names are becoming fashionable again in Scandinavia.
