Meaning & History
Echeide or Echeyde is the name that the Aboriginal Guanches gave to Teide, a volcano in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). As most of the chroniclers transmitted, the Guanches (aboriginal people from Tenerife) conceived of the mountain as the place that housed the forces of evil, mainly the evil figure of Guayota. Even other more recent authors affirm that Teide would be for the ancient canaries a kind of Axis Mundi (a connection between Heaven and Earth or the higher and lower realms). Also, this is a variant of Echedey.
