Meaning & History
This name was used by the 16th-century poet Edmund Spenser, who perhaps intended it to mean "second", "disunity" or "duplicitous" from Latin duo "two" combined with the feminine suffix essa. In his epic poem 'The Faerie Queene' (1590) it was the name of an evil, ugly witch, allegorically representative of Mary Queen of Scots and the Roman Catholic Church.
