Meaning & History
This name was used by the 16th-century poet Edmund Spenser, who perhaps intended it to mean "second", "disunity" or "duplicitous" from Latin #duo# "two" combined with the feminine suffix #essa#. In his epic poem 'The Faerie Queene' (1590) it was the name of an evil, ugly witch, allegorically representative of Mary Queen of Scots and the Roman Catholic Church.
