Short form of (feminine) Etheldred. Dred Scott (c. 1799-1858) was an African American slave who unsuccessfully sued for his and his family's freedom before the Supreme Court of the United States in the landmark case Dred Scott v. Sandford. Harriet Beecher Stowe used it for the title character in her novel Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp (1856).
