Meaning & History
Means "help of God" in Malayalam, composed of Sanskrit देव (deva) "god" and Malayalam സഹായം (sahayam) "help", a translation of Eleazar or Eliezer. This name was adopted by the Catholic martyr Devasahayam Pillai (1712-1752), who was born Neelakanta Pillai into a Hindu Nair family and converted to Christianity in 1745. His baptismal name has been used by the local Christian community since his martyrdom, which occurred on 14 January 1752 because of his conversion to the Catholic religion. In 2022 he was declared a saint by Pope Francis.
