Cyndi Wang Hsin-ling (Chinese: 王心凌; pinyin: Wáng Xīnlíng) is a Taiwanese singer and actress. Wang debuted her musical career as she released her debut album, Begin... (2003). Besides her musical career, Wang has starred in many TV dramas, including The Car Is In Pursuit (2000), Westside Story (2003), Heaven's Wedding Gown (2004), and Smiling Pasta (2006). She started her first tour in 2016, and second in 2019. Wang has been active in the Taiwanese music scene for more than twenty years and at one point, she was one of the top female popstars in the Mandopop industry, regularly selling over a million copies of her every album across Asia. She is widely known as one of the Mandopop Princesses or The Taiwanese Sweetheart.
I think Cyndi Lauper's songs are much more than "guilty pleasures." Sure there have been some novelty numbers, but she is in fact an artist who takes her music seriously. (She just has a bit of a whacky sense of humor). As for the "novelty" of the spelling of her name, I imagine she really was "Cindy" in her younger days. That was the common spelling--probably TOO common for someone setting out to make her mark in the music world. But is the spelling all THAT outrageous? It pretty much mirrors the spelling of its source name: cYnthIa/cYndI). Makes sense to me.
I really, really think Cindy looks much nicer, but I'm not too fond of the name anyway. It makes me think of vapid ditzes from the 80s for some reason. I only associate this spelling with Cyndi Lauper. Don't get me wrong, Cyndi Lauper was and is very likeable as a person, or so it appears, and her songs can be guilty pleasures, but I wouldn't want the name of my child to immediately bring a celebrity with a creatively spelled name to mind.
