Meaning & History
From the characters 重 (chóng, meaning “double” or “layered”) and 耳 (ěr, meaning “ear”). This was the personal name of Duke Wen of Jin (晋文公), a ruler of the state of Jin during the Chinese Spring and Autumn period (770 - 473 BCE). He is famous for enduring a long and arduous period of exile before his ascension, and is considered one of the Five Hegemons alongside Duke Huan of Qi (Xiaobai).
