Meaning & History

The name of the second-brightest star in the night sky. It is possibly derived from Greek Κάνωβος (Kanobos), of uncertain meaning, possibly related to Arabic جَنُوب (janub), meaning "south". In Greek mythology, this was the name of the pilot of King Menelaus' ship in the Iliad. Alternatively, it could be derived from Egyptian Coptic Kahi Nub, meaning "golden earth", referring to the name of a ruined ancient Egyptian port lying near the mouth of the Nile, named after the Greek mythological character.
