Meaning & History
Medieval Dutch form of Brendan via its medieval Latin form Brandanus. The use of this name started in honor of the Irish monastic saint Brendan the Navigator (died circa 577 AD), who was quite popular in the Low Countries throughout the Middle Ages.In medieval Dutch literature, this name occurs in the 12th-century poems Boec van Sente Brandaen ("Book of Saint Brendan") and Van Sente Brandane ("Of Saint Brendan"). The latter poem was the most influential and is also known under the title De reis van Sente Brandane ("The Voyage of Saint Brendan") and the various spellings thereof. Both poems are adaptations (rather than literal translations) of the 9th-century Latin text Navigatio sancti Brendani abbatis ("The Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot").
