Meaning & History
derives from the Germanic name “Boiamund”, composed of two elements: From the Frisian and Germanic elements boii, Bojen, Boje "ruler, dweller" and mundō "protector, protection, tutelage, guardianship". In turn the name means "protector of the Boii". The Boii were a Gallic tribe of the later Iron Age, attested at various times in Cisalpine Gaul (northern Italy), Pannonia (Hungary and its western neighbours), in and around Bohemia (after whom the region is named), and Transalpine Gaul. Original form of Bohemond.
