Meaning & History

According to the French romance Perceforest, Alexander the Great made Betis the King of England following the former’s fictional conquest of Britain. His brother, Gaddifer, was likewise made the King of Scotland. Betis was quickly accepted by the populace, being renamed Perceforest after he had killed the magician Durmart.
