Originally a feminine name, Bénilde has also been used on males in France from the 1800s onwards thanks to Saint Bénilde (known as Benildus Romançon in English, 1805-1862) who chose his religious name in honor of the feminine martyr Sainte Bénilde de Cordoue (known as Saint Benildis of Cordoba in English, ~853).
