Meaning & History

Derived from the same root as the Persian religious title of آیت‌الله (Ayatollah), which originated from a term in passage 51:20–21 of the Quran. It was not commonly used as a title until the early 20th century. The title is derived from the Arabic noun آية (aya) meaning "sign, token" combined with the Arabic noun الله (Allah) meaning "God" (see Allah).

A known bearer of this name is the Pakistani politician Ayatullah Durrani (b. 1956).
