Meaning & History
Derived from the same root as the Persian religious title of آیتالله (Ayatollah), which originated from a term in passage 51:20–21 of the Quran. It was not commonly used as a title until the early 20th century. The title is derived from the Arabic noun آية (aya) meaning "sign, token" combined with the Arabic noun الله (Allah) meaning "God" (see Allah).A known bearer of this name is the Pakistani politician Ayatullah Durrani (b. 1956).
