Usages: Ancient Persian (Hellenized), Persian
Transcription: اتوسا(Persian)
Meaning: Hellenized form of Old Persian *Utauθa meaning literally "well trickling, well granting" or *ʰUtauθa- meaning literally "bestowing very richly" from *hu- "good" and *tauθa- "bestowing richly". The Avestan cognate Hutaosā was borne by the queen of Kavi Vishtaspa, royal patron of the prophet Zarathustra. Cyrus the Great gave the name to his eldest daughter, who married Darius and became the mother of Xerxes. It was used by Alexander Pope in his Essay on Man (1733-34).
