Meaning & History
From the common Semitic root mlk, which in West Semitic means "king" (melek) and in East Semitic means "counselor" (malku). According to The Book of Mormon, Amulek was a missionary who accompanied Alma the Younger to preach the gospel in a wicked city where women and children were being burned alive. Amulek and Alma were captured but exercised such great faith that they were freed from their bonds and the prison walls crumbled around them. Like many names from The Book of Mormon, Amulek is most common among Hispanic, Polynesian, and Filipino Mormons, although it is also used by Mormons from other cultures.
