Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek Ἀμαρυγκεύς (Amarynkeus), though technically Amarygkeus is the correct spelling (compare Lynceus in that regard). The name is derived from Greek ἀμαρυγή (amarygē) meaning "sparkling, twinkling, glancing", which is ultimately derived from the Greek verb ἀμαρύσσω (amaryssō) meaning "to sparkle, to twinkle, to glance" (see Amaryllis). Also compare Greek ἀμάρυγμα (amarygma) meaning "sparkle, twinkle". In Greek mythology, Amarynceus was a chief of the Eleans.
