Meaning & History
Alush is a surviving personal name in the Edisto language of South Carolina. This was the name of a captain or chief of the Edisto Nation encountered by Robert Sandford in 1666. The etymological meaning of this personal name has been lost to time, as the Edisto language, related to other Cusaboan languages, is largely unattested. Superficial comparisons can be drawn between the name "Alush" and the town or province name "Aluete," alternatively rendered as "Aluste," as encountered by Pedro de Ibarra during an expedition of the South Carolina low country in the 17th century. However, the exact etymological meaning of this name is also unknown due to the extinction of all related languages.
