Meaning & History
Means "water dweller", from Nahuatl atl "water" and chane "homeowner, resident, inhabitant". This was a creature from Aztec mythology said to bring water from the ground, depicted as a snake, a lizard, or occasionally a beautiful woman. Alternately, it may be derived from the negative prefix a- and chantli "home, residence", meaning "homeless".
