With the meaning I’m sure people were just going for the sound and not thinking Kay for Katharine etc.

Most people these days don't think of Kay as being short for Katharine, just as a short name. I've met a lot of people named Kay and none of them were short for Katherine or a related name.

The Kay plus Lee thing is pretty obvious and even if some people didn't think of it it's where the name comes from and that is its meaning. I think many people do not worry too much about meanings but it still has one.
