Re: Derek

Are you kidding, how did you get that association?? It was hardly in use at all before the 40s. It's totally a dad name right now.I liked it as a very proto-namenerd. I had a crush named this in 5th grade. He was a cutie pie and it seemed like a fun, sporty name. Fast and easy to say, the D giving it some heft and dignity.I learned to dislike it because my mom says it's like an oil derrick and that's awful.Derek Alexander - I'm lazy about Alexander I think, but it's nice here.
Derek Richard - play up the manliness
Derek Ulysses - f u
Derek Wilhelm - "WWI" actually I do think this works. I think this is my first combo with Wilhelm in it ever.

Then there's the spelling variation Derrick, which is even more oil derrick. A good friend of mine, who sadly passed away young, was named Derrick.

I know practically nothing about name popularity in the US or UK, Derek just felt "WW1 pilot" to me, though I now realise most people would have very different associations.
