Derek
This name has recently grown on me - it has some WW1 pilot charm. What are your thoughts on Derek, what first/middle names would you pair with it, and what would you name a sibling of Derek?

Derek is a handsome name. I can understand why it was popular at one time. Unfortunately, the Derek I presently know is not handsome and none too bright, either.

Are you kidding, how did you get that association?? It was hardly in use at all before the 40s. It's totally a dad name right now.I liked it as a very proto-namenerd. I had a crush named this in 5th grade. He was a cutie pie and it seemed like a fun, sporty name. Fast and easy to say, the D giving it some heft and dignity.I learned to dislike it because my mom says it's like an oil derrick and that's awful.Derek Alexander - I'm lazy about Alexander I think, but it's nice here.
Derek Richard - play up the manliness
Derek Ulysses - f u
Derek Wilhelm - "WWI" actually I do think this works. I think this is my first combo with Wilhelm in it ever.

Then there's the spelling variation Derrick, which is even more oil derrick. A good friend of mine, who sadly passed away young, was named Derrick.

I know practically nothing about name popularity in the US or UK, Derek just felt "WW1 pilot" to me, though I now realise most people would have very different associations.

There was a Derek in my 1st grade class who I had a crush on. It sounds 80s/90s to me. I guess it's a dad name now?But also two-syllable names with "ick" sound endings seem pretty versatile and solid to me.I'd name a sibling to Derek anything I wanted to...just probably not anything with an "ick" sound...um...Derek and Tabitha
Derek and Artem
Derek and Adam
Derek and Taide
Derek and Aida
Derek and Phoebe
Derek and Lazar
Derek and Jamal
Derek and Marcus
Derek and Delia
Derek and Jesse
Derek and Kathleen
Derek and Violet

My image of Derek is more doofy 90s jock than WW1 pilot. I've never cared for it.

I don't see Derek as being that old, it's someone in their 30's-50's to me, as it had quite a leap in popularity in Canada from the late 60's to the late 90's.It is a fine name, not my favourite, but solid and handsome. There is nothing wrong with Derek. I have a cousin Derek whose siblings are Cody and Jacob. I'd pair Derek with something else that reminds me of the same time period but with a somewhat timeless feeling, Brandon, Peter, Patrick, etc.

WWI pilot, huh? Okay.
I like the name. I think it seems sort of self-consciously dressy and handsome and masculine. A little dated.
I don't feel like it's suitable as a middle name. It's a first-name sort of name, to me.Fanciful brother set: Derek, Canute, Marlon, Casimir, Gilbert, Maurice
more realistic-seeming set: Derek, Martin, Trevor, Glenn, Jared, Brandon
if I had a son Derek I'd name his brother and sister: Vincent and Audraoff-the-cuff combos:
Derek Vivian
Derek Geoffrey
Derek Wilfred
Derek Marshall

I feel fairly neutral towards it. A name that's pretty much just "there" decent enough. Derek Allan
Derek Charles
Derek Eugene
Derek Solomon
Derek Louis
Derek Morgan
Derek Lorenzo
Derek Theodore
Derek Walter

I like it a bit better than Eric. In the US, it's more of a seventies and eighties name, he'd likely have brothers named Jason and Chris and sisters named Amber and Brittany.

Do youblike Darek too?

Not really, to be honest - it's a bit of a "dad name" to me, if you know what I mean.
