Year 1: Sylviane (24) and Konrád (25) Blake have been married for two years now. Sylviane, originally from the Brittany region of France, is a humanitarian worker and volunteers for many charities and organisations. Konrád is a comedian, rather new on the scene but so hungry for success that he's really determined to make a go of his career and Sylviane is determined to back him. Being a maternal figure, Sylviane is desperate for children, but Konrád is still unsure. However, they happen upon the idea to adopt a child through one of the organisations Sylviane works for. Konrád himself was a adopted from Slovakia, and while it has occasionally troubled him that he doesn't know his birth parents or where he is from, he adores his adoptive parents and couldn't imagine calling anyone else mum or dad. Knowing the chance he got, he soon warms to the idea of adopting a child and giving them the same new chances he was given. They adopt four month old Nalini Sharma from an orphanage in Channai. Once they return to the UK they officially rename her Nalini Blake. Konrád is entirely against renaming the child, but they decide to give her a middle name. They choose the middle name Manjula after finding in a baby name book.
Year 2: Eight months later, Nalini Blake celebrates her first birthday on the 21st July. Around that time, the Blakes also add their first animal addition to the family. A friend is moving abroad and is unable to take her pet parrot, an African Grey named Sarika. Weary of Sarika's sometimes fruity choice in repeated vocabulary, the Blakes are slow to agree, however they know their friend is desperate and know they can give Sarika a good home. Nalini is fascinated by the bird, which soon settles into her new home.
Year 3: Konrád's friend's dog has puppies. Along with Nalini they visit them, and fall in love at first sight with the 'problem puppy', a soppy thing with giant paws. With Nalini's birthday only a month away, they decide to adopt a new animal member to the household, a St Bernard puppy named Barnaby. Barnaby crashes into their lives and proceeds to create all types of havoc, but, unusually, it is Sylviane who complains least about this upheaval.
Year 4: The Blake family welcomes a birth. Clementine Ophelia Blake, Konrád and Sylviane's first biological daughter, is born on November 3rd with her mother's curly red hair and her father's hazel eyes. Sylviane in particular is concerned as to how Nalini will take to the new birth, but the two sisters form an almost immediate sibling bond.
Year 5: Almost exactly a year later, there's another new addition to the family. Octavia Laurel Blake is born on December 31st, destined to have curly blonde hair and hazel eyes. Barnaby is getting big and flying around the house, knocking children over in his path. Konrád is working hard at his career, and Sylviane is worrying about balancing their growing family with their increasingly demanding work schedules.
