I agree that the problem of playing other people's characters could cause some problems and "bad blood," and I would definitely like to avoid that.
Another idea would be perhaps to play further in the past, that is, these character's ancestors and toward the end, perhaps we see Walter, Magdalena, Joseph, and Adelheid being born. Or we could go into the future and have cameo references to the current players.
It also might be fun to play something a little more fantastic. Perhaps Arthurian, or (forgive my nerdiness) a magical kingdom.
