I cannot agree entirely with Menke.
Please see Modest in this database. It is explained there that Desha (Desja) can be a pet female name coming from Modest.
I could also suppose that Desha is a pet name for Nadezhda. (Also see the link, please.)
I think that in Russian, Desha could actually be a pet name for any female name having a stressed -De- in it.
