Indeed the name is of Ancient Greek origin, a variation of "TAYROS", ("bull"), as Pavlos already mentioned.

The name "TAYROS" goes very far back in time, since the earliest recorded use of it is on a Mycenaean (Linear B) inscription, from around 1500 BCE.
