Taurean: Looking for origin, history, usage info
I have a friend with the first name Taurean. I'm assisting him in find and detail behind his name. Anyone with knowledge behind the history, origin, etc? He is male, family is from Panama in
Central America. Nothing in the database and a search of the boards only came up with mentions, no info.

Well, Taurus and Tauros certainly are the ancient Latin and Greek names of the constellation, but Taurean as a given name probably has a more recent origin. As a modern given name, it seems to have been created as the stage name of the actor Taurean Blacque, who at birth was named Herbert Middleton Jr. His most famous role was as detective Neal Washington on the 1980s American television series Hill Street Blues. If your friend was born after 1981 in the USA, or even close enough to the Canal Zone in Panama to be exposed to American television, his parents were probably inspired by Mr. Blacque's fame. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0086000/

Indeed the name is of Ancient Greek origin, a variation of "TAYROS", ("bull"), as Pavlos already mentioned.

LGPN (http://www.lgpn.ox.ac.uk/) covers 23 variations of the name, shared between 128 people in the ancient times. The name "TAYROS" goes very far back in time, since the earliest recorded use of it is on a Mycenaean (Linear B) inscription, from around 1500 BCE.
"Until the day that an ancient inscription is found with the name "Alexandrovski" (or "Alexandrev" or "Alexandrov") written on it instead of "Alexander", true Macedonia and true Macedonians will remain Greek, as they always were."

Taurus in Latin = Bull, as in the sign of the zodiac, so Taurean would be: Like a bull. No idea about its history as a name ... but a glance at his date of birth might well Reveal All.

Indeed, Taurus/Toro is related to the Latin Taurus which is derived from the Greek Tauros. LPGN lists several names that are offshoots of Tauros (Eg Taurion, Taurinos, etc). Furthrmore, a priest of Poseidon was known as Taureios (Liddell-Scott).
