name update + family trees
Another update:
http://www.behindthename.com/updates/update78.php
Also, there's a new feature I'm testing out, that visually displays the relationships between related names. To see it, view a name and then click the "related names" link on the right. Then, at the bottom of the resulting list of related names, click the "view family tree" link. Please let me know if you find any problems or have any comments!
Example for Joshua:

Is totally and utterly awesome. For someone who is a visual learner it's paradise - nice going!

Ditto!!! *w* love love love it.
Whoa! I cannot believe my eyes that how many names have spun off of just one name in a period of 2000 years.
Thank you so much for adding the family tree - it's absolutely fascinating! Now I'm going to be killing even more time here than I already do! :)
I've made a couple changes:
1. I've highlighted the diminutives and short forms by placing a stripe in the box.
2. There's a way to collapse sections of the tree using the + and - buttons.

Collapsible sections
That sounds cool! I don't know if it's just me, but I can't get any of them to collapse.

Oops, the Internet Explorer version was broken. It's fixed for me now in IE 8. Please try again!
Now it works fine
Same problem here
Thanks ... the tree is a very useful summary!!!
Does a less well job in Arabic (Salim and Salman are not seen as related, for example, even though they have the same root, cf. Yahweh does link to Jonathan even though it is only related to a part of the root of the latter).
But I am confused about all this: all the Jo- names seem to be linked into a tree of Yahweh, but not all the -el names. Are these different kinds of connections? (i.e. is Jonathan and John more closely related than Michael and Nathaniel, either structurally or conceptually?)
Also, though it does link the obvious Quranic and Biblical connections (Isa is in the obvious place), it does not go so far as proto-semitic in trying to link the ilah of Allah to the eloah series or to the lofty, climbing Ali- series of names, either in Hebrew or in Arabic. That is less of a problem, because the etymological analysis does need to stop somewhere; and, may be an onomastics board is not a good place to debate the Nostratic hypothesis :-) But, for people like me who do not know the semitic languages, it would have helped to draw out the Arabic-Hebrew connections.

Salim and Salman are not shown as related because they come from a common root word, not from a common name. The database is filled primarily with names, I haven't collected many root words. You can find a few family trees which spring from common roots, eg http://www.behindthename.com/php/tree.php?name=annunziato. However, I haven't done too many of these yet since that's another huge undertaking. All the elements in dithematic Greek, Germanic and Slavic names could potentially be added. This would show the ultimate relations between Albert and Robert, and even between such diverse names as Vladimir and Arnold.
As for Jo- names relating to Yahweh... there is an etymological connection between the Jo- names and Yahweh, where there is only a semantic connection between the -el names and Yahweh.

Thanks ... this site is a wonderful resource.
I love love love the new family tree feature! Well done. Thank you!
Yay for new names!
And I adore the family tree:-) Thank you!

The family tree tool is absolutely great. Some ideas that maybe can do it greater:
a) Different background for the nicknames (stripped perhaps) just to be visually noticeable like the feminine forms.
b) When the forms have not other derivated forms, to group them. For instance, Josué in French, Spanish and Portuguese can be all in one single square, whereas Jesús in Spanish and Jesús in Catalan (if it was) would be in two separate squares because the Spanish nicknames are not valid for the Catalan.
I don't understand the value of the green frames.

a) Yes, that's a good idea
b) That's also a good idea, it would save some space. Might be a little tricky to program, but I will take a look at least.
As for the green frames, JHK has given you the right answer.

I think the green frames should make it easier to find the name you searched for in the big tree. I find that quite helpful, if you are looking for the position of a specific name in the tree instead of wanting to analyse the whole tree. Jane, for example is not that easy to find in the family tree of YAHWEH / YEHOCHANAN.

That makes sense. Thank you
Wow, that's a great feature! Thank you.
Wow!
That family tree thing is so wonderful! Thanks! I tried it out on a few names and didn't see any problems.
And YAY, Leofdæg and Madelief! :)
