The surname Bikel as in Theodore Bikel is probably a Jewish surname which was originally a diminutive of a Yiddish, Polish, or Russian word meaning "ox" or "bull", since A Dictionary of Surnames gives that origin for "Bickel", and Theodore Bikel was certainly Jewish. But that may have nothing to do with your friend's given name.
