Yiddish is basically German, with some Hebrew, Russian etc words - as spoken by Jews in central Europe from medieval times onward. Lots of Yiddish names have the -el ending; nothing to do with god, it's a diminutive form.Point is that, since Yiddish uses Hebrew words, quite possibly both are correct as origins.
