I'm no Portuguese speaker, but I've had many business contacts who are. I believe the diphthong -ao (w/tilde over "a") is pronounced with a nasalized "n" at the end. Therefore "saint" ("sao" w/tilde) comes across like "song", not "saO". As in "Sao Paolo"...

I've heard Portuguese, all my life and what goes through my ears is "Sau Paulo" and "Shoau" (for São Paulo and João)... Maybe it is my Latin take of the scene...
**In Brazilian Portugese, that is. I wouldn't know about the Portugal version of Portugese, but I do know they are very different.
