If sh- makes a sh sound, then zh makes a zh sound - OK? And Joao is Zhow, to rhyme with How Now, Brown Cow.

I'm no Portuguese speaker, but I've had many business contacts who are. I believe the diphthong -ao (w/tilde over "a") is pronounced with a nasalized "n" at the end. Therefore "saint" ("sao" w/tilde) comes across like "song", not "saO". As in "Sao Paolo"...

I've heard Portuguese, all my life and what goes through my ears is "Sau Paulo" and "Shoau" (for São Paulo and João)... Maybe it is my Latin take of the scene...
