It didn't even make the Top 1000 in the US between 1880 and 1900, which, given that the name pools were similar in all English-speaking countries, makes it highly unlikely that the name was "very popular" during that time period.

Could it possibly be that maybe she was talking about a certain region within a country. While it might not have popped up on the top 1000 list for a country it could very well have been a popular name within a town, county, state or province...I know Ive thought this before when people have said that a name was really popular where they live, but where I live I know no one by that name.
You didnt need to bark that at her. Her question was merely what you thought of the name, and like everyone else on this site you should have stuck to the age old rule, "if you have nothing nice to say, dont say anything at all", (or at least something constructive in this case).
