Naomi has always sounded rather harsh to my ears. The Spanish form, Noemi, on the other hand, sounds much softer to my ears.

Noemi is quite popular in my area -completely French-speaking, no Spanish at all, so don't know reason for popularity, except that it's a pretty name.
