My cousin has a little girl, Abbie. The name on her birth certificate is Abigail, but I've only ever heard her called that maybe three times since she was born (she's 3 now). It's just so that she has the choice when she grows up, and isn't forced to use a 'cutesy' nickname for her entire life.
As for Charlie, though, I think this is now becoming one of those names that is quite acceptable as a stand-alone name, like Jack or Kate, in the UK at least. I think most people would be more surprised to meet 'Charlie- it's short for Charles' than they would to meet 'Charlie- it's short for Charlie-George.'
