It's not something that I would do, personally. I would prefer to give them a more formal name that they can fall back on when they get older, if they grow out of their nickname or just don't like it anymore. But, I guess my logic is a little flawed, as children can end up disliking their name no matter how long or formal it is!

Still, I personally prefer full names to nicknames, as formal names.
