Nickname for a surname?
I'm writing a graphic novel taking place in the Great Depression era Brooklyn. One of the main characters is a shoddy, crafty Sicilian-Hungarian named Riley Lovász ([pronounced something like "LUH-vahs"] The surname wasn't ever changed because his dad was in the country illegally). I'd refer to him mostly by his surname but the problem is that it's impossible to read if you're not familiar with Hungarian pronunciations.
Soooo I was wondering if anyone had ideas for nicknames (out of the surname, of course). That'd be a huge help!

Lovy / Lovey? It feels kind of cutesy, which appeals to me immensely for some reason--perhaps the dichotomy of his character versus his name. Also, Laz / Lasz, Vaz / Vasz, Lolo, Lova (which offers all sorts of terrible puns like "Lova Man," one of my favourite jazz tunes ;), Lola, Loz, Vava, Vova.
Clearly, I'm treating this like a comedy, which it probably isn't--but what can I say? Lova Man sounds cool. ;)

...And then he said, "You're independent, aren't you?"
"Yes," said Laura.
A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having.

Actually, I like Lova Man! xD There isn't one in there I don't like.
I know you're not asking for suggestions beyond the nickname, but I would *really* ditch that first name. Naming him John or Peter or something would be far more typical if his parents were trying to give him a name that would help him 'blend in' in America. Riley doesn't make a bit of sense for either part of his heritage or for the long-common habit of making one's background less conspicuous. If anything its connotation to me is Irish, which wouldn't have done him any favors around the turn of the century (and certainly not before then). It feels way off the mark.

I SHOULD probably change it, but I've been calling him that for years and it's like he won't let me. His middle name is Vincenzo so I suppose I could make it that or Vincent instead.
Why is this so hard for me!? xD
