I dunno. I guess because I come from a family that loves using cutesy nickname-names, I still see them as fine, real names. I've had ancestors and family members named
Lottie,
Toni,
Coco,
Lillie,
Derry, Tressie,
Tommy,
Kelly,
Jennie,
Willi, and
Rudi. I don't know if some of them did technically have longer names recorded somewhere, but most of them were buried under these little names and were never called anything else all their lives.
Once I got out into the world and started meeting real live professional people with names like
Dixie and
Ollie and
Penny I realized it's really not a big deal. Actually a lot of these types of names have kind of become a status symbol; rich people love giving each other and their kids silly little names, so something fluffy or childish like
Didi, Cookie, or
Chip actually screams "old money" to me, ironically.
The only names I find really unfortunate are things like
Sissy. And one time I met a girl named Dodo, which I thought was pretty bad.... but she was a mega-rich Middle Eastern heiress so I didn't feel too sorry for her.
There was an actress from Old Hollywood called Googie Withers - I always found that one a bit hard to take seriously.
