What names scream "Detective in a Film Noir" vibe to you?
Title -- the name would fit the typical film noir detective you'd see. I'm curious to see what all you come up with. (it can be just detective vibe-type names, too!)If I had to say one, it'd probably be Sterling. Maybe not quite within the era but I think it fits the personalities within noirs?

Rick, Sam, Harry, Frank, Pete, basically almost any classic name whittled down to its diminutive.

Male names? Rene

Something generic, nondescript, short and strong. Like Jack Archer.

I think his first name would be fairly non-descript, Sam, Matt, Tom, Jim.

In my mind 'detective names' are all about the surname. They usually have some boring first name, like John, but paired with a cool surname, like:
Bancroft
Arnaud
Devereaux
Harkness
MacGillivray
Pembroke
Silber

Probably too literally inspired by detectives and authors of detective novels, but:Raymond Arthur Dashiell Len Gray Irv Eddie Cliff Willis Gus Nelson Murray Lorne BurtonKinsey Agatha Marguerite Geneva Dora Mame or Mamie Verna Loretta Hettie Della Anita Marcella Some of the other suggestions in this thread, like Sterling and Velma, are spot on.

I think that popular 30's / 40's names suit the Film Noir vibe. Ronald, Robert, John, Frank, Harold, Harry, Tony, Rex, Walter, Raymond, Edmund / Edward / Eddie / Ed, Norman, Stanley Velma, Cecelia, Cora, Vivienne, Lucille, Leigh, Carmen, Marlene, JoanSurname : Draper, Callaway, Kelly, Halliday, Faulkner, Howard, Marlowe, Barton

Roscoe for sure. I love that name because it's so noir detectivey!

Harvey has always given me strong detective vibes, it's just got such a nose-to-the-grindstone air about it. I can also see Conrad and Cliff. I feel like noir really meshes well with 'last-name-for-first-name' types too, like Holloway, Bowman, Caldwell, and Sullivan.
