Re: Thoughts on the name..
in reply to a message by H3lp
Well, my first thought is that it isn’t a name, it’s a word.My second thought is that it’s an inherently classist term, which is offputting. It makes me wonder if the parents wish for the “good old days” of exploiting indentured servants. My third thought, kind of related to the second, is how the term “gentrification” has become code for wealthy white people moving into a neighbourhood previously inhabited by people of colour and taking over by pricing them out of the neighbourhood, changing zoning and other shady tactics.

I've heard about the first meaning and the band The Gentrys that's why I like the name. I've never heard anyone mentioning the 2nd meaning and the people I've mentioned in to say its an acceptable name

That does make me wonder why you asked, though. People that you know in person are more likely to share your experiences and perspectives, more likely to want to please you, and less likely to know a lot about names. Around here you’ll find different perspectives, honest answers and tons of onomastic knowledge. At the end of the day, you like what you like. I know many people who hate my taste and my daughter’s name. Be secure in your knowledge of what’s right for you, because if you just go around seeking affirmation you might find the opposite.
