Today's name of the day is Magdalene. WDYT?
As an English speaker, I have heard this particularly spelling pronounced
three different ways: MAG-də-lin, MAG-də-leen, and mag-də-LAY-nə. The first pronunciation is what I've usually heard in church in reference to Mary Magdalene, but the other two pronunciations have belonged to people. The potential pronunciation confusion is what would deter me from this name (the last, German-influenced pronunciation is my favorite), and I can see why Madeline / Madeleine is more popular in the Anglophone world.
That, and I also actually have a soft spot for Magdala (the village Mary Magdalene was from) as a personal name.
