HelpMns needed and Chinese names
Hi everyone,
I haven't spoken to my husband about names since I was pregnant. We found it really hard to agree on anything. I brought up the subject with him yesterday and he actually liked a couple of names I like too. They aren't my absolute favourites, but it still made me really pleased! He doesn't like any of my boy's names. The only one we could agree on is Luke and that is out because I called the baby it in my head. If you are really brave you can suggest some boy's names too. At the moment all I can get out of him is Joseph.
As a side note, do you think we should give our future children a Chinese name (dh is Malaysian, ethnic Chinese)? I don't speak any Mandarin or Cantonese, my husband speaks both. I don't know any Chinese names at all and my husband really isn't interested. His Chinese name is Wan Keen which has put him off in a big way. Anyway, I was just wondering what people thought of it.

I like Celestine the best of the three you listed. For Celestine, such a long name with emphasis on the first syllable, I personally would go with either a one-syllable mn (the two I like would be Claire and Joy; I admit that Rose fits nicely, decide for yourself if the "Everygirl's mn" is for you), or a two-syllable mn that has emphasis on the *second* syllable. I offer a list that meets this limited set of criteria. There are a few that sound alike due to same or similar endings, and I have grouped those together. The ones I like have the * symbol:

Thanks for your suggestions. I like Celestine too. It is interesting that you brought up Rose, this is my mother in law's English name. Her Chinese name means Rose too and my sister in law's daughter has it as a middle name in Chinese (her first name is Yasmin).
I like Joy, although I don't think my husband would like it (I'm going to try it out anyway), and I have three cousins called Clare, so I don't think I'm going to go there.
Celestine Corrine (like "begin")- I have a soft spot for Corinne.
Celestine Marie*- Marie is one of the few names my husband likes!

I suppose I might feel a bit of a joke using a Ukrainian name because I don't speak it well, I probably speak better Irish and that is only because I learnt it at school. Either way, I thought it might sound like the names are on some horrible cultural collision course (Fionnuala Kateryna Xiao Xiao- argh!).

If your long list were candy, I would have gained a pound just now. Our tastes are very similar. I weep that there is a lover of names like Barnaby and Winifred who may never get to use them because their partner doesn't share their style. Ah well, Mariana, Odelia and Celestine show promise. You certainly can have fun using them. How about:

Thanks for your reply! It makes me quite sad I can't use Barnaby and Winifred too. I am working really hard on him though. I think with the unfortunate associations of his Chinese name he is trying to avoid us using a name he thinks has teasing potential.

I know Ottilie is a French name, but perhaps if he came to see it more as part of the charming, old-fashioned name trend, like Millie, Lillie, Natalie, Isabelle and Josephine. What about Ottilie, nn Tillie?

I'm not sure if you're considering it as a fn, but I thought I'd pass on my favorite Pearl combination. I saw a little girl in a magazine once named Pearl Ann-Marie (or was it Pearl Annmarie?). Similar to your Mariana, no? Pearl Marianne?
If you wanted to honor your sister Laura, how about Daphne? Celestine Daphne?

I'll test out Ottilie with him, our tastes in names are just not compatible and how much time we spend thinking about names is rather different too. I like Tillie ever so much, and I quite fancied it as a nn if I used Matilda. He said no way though, I'm hoping I might still be able to get it into the mn position.
I'm not sure when I'll be naming a baby, so for now it is great fun to have a wonderful list without my husband spoiling things. Being the person I am though, I have to talk about the things I'm interested in and he brings me back down to earth with a thump.
I love Pearl Marianne, I think Pearl has great potential actually, good instincts! I'd never thought of Daphne I think it could work.
