Re: Madeline Vs. Margaret
To my eys and ears, Madeline is tired and Margaret is timeless. Also, Madeline, Madeleine, Mad-Lynn ... too much choice and too much confusion.Madeline is the spelling I prefer; it's a family name, though not one I'd like to perpetuate. Even the distant aunt whose name it was always went by her mn, May.I like Margaret a lot, and don't mind Maggie and Peggy as nns. Meg does not appeal, and where I live the standard nn for Margaret is Margie, with the g as in gasp, not gin. That, I dislike.

It's interesting that Margie is the standard nn for you. I've known two Margarets with this pronunciation of the nn. One was Margi and the other Margy. This nn is unusual in the US, I think.Margie wth a soft G as in gin was used a lot in the US in past generations.

I live in the deep south in the US, and I know Margarets, who go by Maggie, Meg, and Margie.
