"Dear friend"?

Cher ami means "dear (male) friend" in French. All I can think is that this would be a difficult name to have around anyone who speaks French - particularly for a female bearer.

Yeah, but people are totally at home with Bellamy and Bonamy! Logically, then, why not? Just because it's unfamiliar?
I don't know of any women or girls named Bellamy or Bonamy (the latter is a name I've never even heard). But in the case of Bellamy, that could also be in honor of a surname.
