It is supposedly common in the US but I haven't met many.
I had a good friend growing up named
Stella St.
Clair that I met in preschool art classes. We still know each other since our parents were a part of the punk scene and even though she moved away she later came back, so we ended up at the same high school. She is a semi famous model in NYC now and a fashion designer, she goes by
Stella Rose Saint
Clair.
I met adorable young sisters 6 or 8 years ago named
Stella and
Fiona at the Oregon
Star Party.
I also knew a
Stella who went to college with me and we had two classes together. Those are the only three
Stella's that I remember meeting, there is some possibility that I've come across one or two more in passing.
The weird thing is how many people yell out
Stella when they hear the name - they are referencing the movie "How
Stella Got Her Groove Back". Everyone thinks that they are being so original when they do it. I've seen people do it to my friend and they often would do it when I would tell people that one of my favorite names is
Stella. Hopefully the general population has gotten it out of their system.
Stella is one of my top 25 favorite girl's names and a few years ago it was in my top 5. Unfortunately like with
Hazel my husband hates it, which in turn has affected my feelings on it. I love that it means star since the stars have always been one of my favorite things. I also love
Estella and
Estelle.
