Mindy
Seeing the recent negative comments about Mandy made me think of Mindy. I had a friend named Mindy. In her case, it was a nickname for Melinda. She once commented that she hated her full name Melinda and would never want to be called it on a regular basis. I surmise then that she liked her nickname Mindy, or at least found it far preferable to Melinda.Do you like Mindy, either stand alone or as a nickname? Or is it awful? Is there any full name you think it could be a nickname for other than Melinda?

I much prefer it to Mandy! It's so pretty. I love Miranda Skye and Mimosa Fern, Mindy and Mimsy, as a sibset, though of course they're way too matchy-matchy when used together. Melinda and Mimosa would be nice, too. But anyway, yes, I really like it. I'm into cutesy nicknames right now.

I really, really love Melinda. I'd probably shorten it to Mel, though, or Linda. I do not like Mindy. I mean, I don't hate it, but it's just kind of blah. I think I do prefer it to Mandy, though. It feels far too cutesy to be a given name.I think Mindy can be a short form of Amanda? Or maybe I'm just making that up.Other names Mindy possibly could be a nn for:Min
Mina / Minna
Minerva
Minako
Araminta
Tasmin

I also know a Melinda who is called Mindy except she spells it Myndee. I'm indifferent to the name although I don't like it well enough to use it.

I know a couple Mindys through church, and I hate to say that I very much dislike the name. It's ugly and outdated, and kinda makes me think of a frumpy older woman (not that either of the Mindys I know are like that). It's on par with Cindy to me.

Mindy is not a bad name per se; it's decent and tolerable but for some unknown reason, the name always annoyed me to some extent, same with Mandy. They are decent enough names but something about them causes slight annoyance.
I guess I prefer Mindy on its own; over Melinda

The only Mindy I know used it for Melinda too.I wasn't super keen on Mindy, but it's certainly cute in the way that Molly, Rosie, Cindy and Dolly are. NMS, but I can see the appeal. I have always likes Melinda though. We actually considered it for a few days before we named Clarisse. I was rooting for the nickname Min or Minnie though. Lindy would have been cute too.
In the end, we added Melina to our list and left it at that. The d seemed to keep Melinda dated, while removing it gave it a more modern feel.
MISREAD: thought you asked for alternate nicknames to Melinda.
I think Mindy could work for Aminda, Mirinda or Miranda too. Maybe Minodora, but that would be a stretch. It actually works for Mohinder too. I have heard that used a lot on TV shows lately for the token Indian character. Mindy would be a quirky nickname for it that he could get away with being "foreign" etc.

It's a lot nicer than Mandy, but I have no idea why.
I've never met a Melinda - possibly one of those names that took off more in the US? The only Mindy I've known was actually Jasminder.

It's cute, but only just cute. My best friend is Melinda Erin, nn Mindy. I really like Melinda and if I was using it I'd rather just use Melinda and not a nn.
Back in Oklahoma I had a friend in school named Melinda who was just called Melinda, except in her family where she was called Winnie. When she was very little, she couldn't say her name, which was Melinda Lee, and what she came up with was close to Winnie-Wee, so that was her family nn.I suppose Mindy could be short for Miranda, or even Mildred, or Minerva, but it'd be a fairly long stretch.
