Re: Nicknames for Marlene
I never specially thought of Marlene as dated or old. Would it really be criticised all the time? I quite like it.You're right that it is a bit sophisticated for a little girl, but Molly is an adorable nickname. Myself, I prefer Lena, but none can deny that Molly is cute.
If it was a middle name there would be no occasion to shorten it at all, though.

The only Marlene I can think of is Marlene Dietrich, the actress, so I can see the thoughts about it being old or dated. The name is a smush of Maria and Magdelene, so maybe you could get away with the nns for Maria and Magda or Maggie? Or would that be a stretch for some people?

I kind of put this out there so I could see what peoples' opinions might be on Marlene as a first name, I agree with you Lena and Molly are the only nicknames I *really* like out of all of the ones I listed.Something that just popped into my head while writing this is Marlene Theodosia, I think you could make tons of names with it it just seems one of those names that though people call it old fashioned it is very flexible in what it might be paired with.
